Music has always been a universal language.

Through sounds, rhythms and instruments, cultures from all over the world have expressed emotions, handed down stories and built collective identities. Ethnic music, in particular, represents a living and deep heritage: a bridge between tradition and spirituality, between past and present.

Gnawa.io was born from this desire for connection between peoples through music.

It is a platform dedicated to those who are passionate about ancestral sounds, authentic instruments and ritual practises related to the musical cultures of the world. Our goal is to enhance and make accessible objects, tools and content that belong to a meaningful intangible heritage.

Why "Gnawa"

The name gnawa.io is a tribute to the Gnawa culture, a musical and spiritual tradition of North Africa with roots in sub-Saharan Africa.

Through the hypnotic sound of the guembri, the metallic rhythm of the qraqeb and the ceremonies of trance and healing, Gnawa music represents a sacred language, a means of connection with the divine and with the community.

Every year, this culture is celebrated at the Festival Gnaoua et Musiques du Monde in Essaouira, Morocco, an international event that brings together Gnawa musicians and artists from all over the world.

This spirit of meeting, exchange and mutual respect is what inspired us to create gnawa.io: a digital place where musical traditions can continue to live and spread, beyond all borders.

The scene seems to be part of a cultural or traditional event, with people wearing garments made from natural fibers. The ground is sandy, and there are wooden logs and branches around.
